SPEAC and Brighton Collaboration Featured in Task Force for Global Health’s Spotlight on Mpox Vaccine Safety

We’re proud to see the work of the Brighton Collaboration and the Safety Platform for Emergency vACcines (SPEAC) highlighted in a recent article published by the Task Force for Global Health: “Vaccine Safety: Shaping the Fight Against Mpox.”

The article underscores the pivotal role of vaccine safety in outbreak response, spotlighting how SPEAC rapidly mobilized Brighton tools and experts to support coordinated mpox safety monitoring during the 2022–2023 global outbreak.

“The mpox response demonstrates Brighton’s ability to turn evidence into action and ensures that vaccine safety remains a core component of any emergency vaccine rollout,” the article notes.

Turning Evidence into Action During the Mpox Emergency

As mpox cases surged globally, vaccine developers, regulators, and public health agencies needed a trusted, rapid way to monitor vaccine safety in real time. Through SPEAC, Brighton Collaboration responded swiftly by:

  • Creating new standardized case definitions to ensure harmonized reporting of adverse events
  • Providing digital data collection forms, prepopulated vaccine safety profiles shared with developers, and template cohort event monitoring protocol for active vaccine safety surveillance digital tools and templates to accelerate data collection and safety signal detection
  • Supporting CEPI partners like Africa CDC with expert guidance on mpox vaccine safety oversight

SPEAC’s efforts enabled stakeholders to conduct safety assessments in a harmonized and rigorous manner. This model of responsive, evidence-based collaboration exemplifies the value of building and maintaining strong safety infrastructure—before, during, and after outbreaks.

Strengthening Partnerships for Global Health

The article also highlights the broader partnership between Brighton Collaboration and CEPI. Through this collaboration, we are continually working to:

  • Support CEPI-funded vaccine developers with tools, training, and expert safety reviews
  • Provide public health agencies with reliable, ready-to-use safety assessment resources
  • Help ensure that vaccine safety is not an afterthought—but an integral part of equitable, effective immunization activities during the challenging environment of outbreak response.

We thank the Task Force for shining a light on this important work and for being a dedicated partner in advancing global vaccine safety.
