The Brighton Collaboration has published a new case definition for acute intraocular inflammation (aIOI), providing a standardized approach to identifying, assessing, and reporting cases in vaccine safety research and surveillance.
The case definition, published in Vaccine, was developed through the Safety Platform for Emergency vACcines (SPEAC) project, funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
aIOI encompasses inflammatory conditions affecting structures within the eye. The new Brighton Collaboration definition includes anterior, intermediate, and posterior uveitis; panuveitis; retinal vasculitis; and neuroretinitis.
Designed for use across the vaccine life cycle, the case definition can support clinical trials, background incidence studies, causality assessment studies, and post-licensure pharmacovigilance. By providing standardized criteria and defined Levels of Diagnostic Certainty (LOC), it is intended to improve the consistency and comparability of vaccine safety data across studies, surveillance systems, and geographic settings.
The case definition was developed through a review of the available evidence and expert consensus, with input from subject matter experts, Brighton Collaboration process experts, and vaccine safety stakeholders. It also includes guidelines for the collection, analysis, and presentation of data related to aIOI.
