We are pleased to share that six members of the SPEAC team—Andy Stergachis, Esperança Sevene, Mohammad Gazi Shah Alam, Samantha Mudigonda, Dale Nordenberg, and Robert Chen—join Rebecca Chandler and Alexander Precioso of CEPI as co-authors on a newly published article in Drug Safety:
“Systematic Review of Active Safety Surveillance of Vaccines and Medicines in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.”
This systematic review assessed how active safety surveillance systems are being implemented across LMICs. From 13,027 records screened, 423 publications met inclusion criteria, representing surveillance activities across 96 LMICs. More than half of the included studies focused on vaccines, and many described the growing use of mobile technologies for follow-up, online data collection, and adverse event reporting.
The authors identified notable innovations—including flexible surveillance systems, multi-sector collaborations, and select cross-country efforts—alongside persistent challenges such as small sample sizes, sustainability constraints, staffing limitations, and limited use of standard case definitions and harmonized digital tools. The findings underscore the importance of strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding the use of standard case definitions, and fostering cross-country collaborations to advance active safety surveillance in LMICs for vaccine and medicine developers, pharmacovigilance and public health programs, and international organizations.
